ABOUT US

Nighthawk:

n. a recurring thought that only seems to strike you late at night—an overdue task, a nagging guilt, a looming and shapeless future—that circles high overhead during the day, that pecks at the back of your mind while you try to sleep, that you can successfully ignore for weeks, only to feel its presence hovering outside the window, waiting for you to finish your coffee, passing the time by quietly building a nest.

-The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

(informal) n. a person who is habitually active or wakeful at night.

-Oxford Languages Dictionary

Sometimes, our most vulnerable and bizarre ideas surface during the night, while the hours run over our eyes and leap into the morning.

Nighthawk Literature is here to discover the vulnerable, the bizarre, and the unusual. We strive to publish writing that explores all ranges of human emotion, whether dark and humorful, or scathing and relentless. We seek hauntingly imaginative work that transcends the threshold of language and demonstrates the exciting new avenues of literature ahead of us.

Despite our evident love for the gothic, we’re not looking for a specific theme in your writing! If you are proud of your work and want to extend it to the world, we are here to make that possible! Our goal is to create a safe space where all writers with various identities and histories can meet within the pages of our Issues. We are especially here to uplift the voices of those who have been left unheard. We urge artists and writers with historically marginalized identities to fill our inbox with submissions! Your art is needed, it is necessary and valued.

At Nighthawk Literature, we are dedicated to elevating emerging writers with distinctive and original voices. Our literary Issues aim to gather a volume of unforgettable poems and stories that chase our thoughts late at night and follow us into the vivid daybreak.
